Hometown Heroes Veterans Banners

Honor Your ‘Hometown Hero’ With A Military Banner in Old Hilliard

Hilliard City Schools and the City of Hilliard are working together to honor our community’s veterans through a new program to place banners in Old Hilliard.

The banners will recognize and celebrate those who have served their country through military service.

The Hometown Heroes program will allow family members of any current resident or former Hilliard City Schools student who has served or who currently serves in the military to buy a banner, which will be displayed in Old Hilliard around select 2021 patriotic holidays such as Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

Those featured on the banners must be military veterans or active duty service members in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard. Those serving in the Reserves or National Guard may also be honored. This program will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 200 eligible applicants.

The idea originated with Hilliard Davidson High School, which received a Purple Star Award for its efforts on behalf of veterans in January from the Ohio Chapter of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission.

“We earned this status through our efforts to help students who will serve in the military and students whose family members are active military members,” said Lori Mongolier, Hilliard Davidson Guidance Counselor. “We remembered how the City worked with the high school athletic departments last spring to recognize spring athletes who would not otherwise have their accomplishments celebrated because of COVID-19. We thought a similar partnership could be created between our three high schools and the City to recognize those who have served their country through military service.”

The cost to buy a banner is $35. Those buying a banner must provide either a high-resolution digital photo or a hand copy of a photo that can be scanned at high enough resolution to look good on a 16-inch by 46-inch banner.

The first time the banners will be displayed will be in February 2021, then periodically displayed during the patriotic holidays in 2021. When the banners are “retired” at the end of 2021, they will be given to the purchasing families to keep as a memento.

Two different patriotic designs will be available to differentiate between veterans and active-duty personnel.

“We see this as a great opportunity to recognize those who have sacrificed on behalf of this country while building an additional partnership between the City and School District,” said David Ball, Director of Community Relations for the City of Hilliard. “The City will provide the real estate on the poles in Old Hilliard and the personnel to install them, while the high schools will handle the administrative duties associated with tracking sales and collecting veterans’ photos.”

Banner sales begin Wednesday, Dec. 9. The deadline to be included for Presidents Day will be Jan. 13, but banners ordered after that date will be displayed at other patriotic holidays later in the year.

To place an order, download the application to your computer, complete it digitally (or print it and complete it manually), and send it to Lori Mongolier, following the directions on the application.

Banner information, including military branch and spelling of the service member’s name, will be taken directly from the application. Neither the City nor School District is responsible for misidentified military branches or misspellings that were submitted with the application.

The City is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged banners (including damage incurred by acts of nature and vandalism). Should damage occur and banners need repair, they will be removed and given back to the applicant. It will be the applicant’s responsibility to have the banners repaired or replaced.

Hilliard Davidson High School will oversee and administer the Hometown Heroes program including, but not limited to, photo approvals, application guidelines and processing, fee structure, and program policy.

There are a limited number of poles in Old Hilliard. This program will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 200 applicants. Banners will be displayed in Old Hilliard around select patriotic holidays in 2021 and, at the City’s discretion, may be relocated to other areas of Hilliard.

The applicant must be an immediate family member of the Hometown Hero being honored. By submitting an application, the applicant agrees he or she has permission to use the service member’s likeness and name in the banner.

Banners will be displayed around four major holidays in 2021: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.
