Congratulations are in order for John Carter, a member of the City of Hilliard’s Public Service Department, who ranked toward the top at the Central Ohio Roadeo this week.
The competition, hosted by American Public Works Association (APWA), is the official follow-up to Hilliard’s internal Roadeo competition, which was held in October.
The event brought together the best snowplow drivers from across 15 Central Ohio counties, municipalities, and townships to compete and network. Carter took home fourth place.
Drivers navigated a course built to simulate real-world scenarios, including avoiding mailboxes, turning and reversing through tight spaces, and plow-maneuvering precision, all while operating a 2.5-ton truck.
With winter officially on its way, here are a few reminders for snow season:
- Use caution when driving near a snowplow and never pass a plow.
- Do not shovel or plow into City streets, driveway aprons, or around fire hydrants and mailboxes.
- Remove parked cars from the street.
- Keep children away from snowplows.
Residents are asked to keep their sidewalks and driveway aprons free of snow and ice during winter weather.
Did you know you can track our plows? Using SnowPaths, residents can track the location, direction, and plow and spreader status of our snowplows in real time. Plus, check out the trucks’ fun, community chosen names! Some favorites include Truck Norris, Luke Snowwalker, and Buzz Iceclear.
All City of Hilliard streets receive snow removal service according to priorities that have been established based on traffic volumes and speeds. Learn more on our Winter Weather webpage here: SnowPaths Fleet Tracking | City of Hilliard
