Residents looking to safely dispose of unwanted ammunition will have the opportunity soon as the City of Hilliard Division of Police partners with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to host a community ammunition take back day.

The Safer Homes Spring Clean-Out event will take place Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, 4951 Northwest Parkway in Hilliard.

Residents should enter through Gate 5 off Northwest Parkway.

The event is designed to give community members a free, anonymous and convenient way to dispose of old, unwanted or unused ammunition. No identification will be required, and no questions will be asked.

“This event is about safety,” said Hilliard Police Chief Michael Woods “If you have ammunition at home that you no longer need, we encourage you to bring it in so it can be disposed of properly.”

“Partnering with the Hilliard Division of Police in our first-ever Ammunition Take Back Day is an important step in keeping our community safe,” said Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin.  “By giving residents a secure way to dispose of unwanted ammunition, we’re reducing potential risks in homes and helping prevent accidents before they happen.”

What’s accepted:

  • Old, unwanted or surplus ammunition
  • Ammunition in any condition

Participants are encouraged to keep ammunition in its original packaging, if possible.

What’s not accepted:

  • Firearms of any type — this event is for ammunition only
  • Hazardous materials
  • Explosives or explosive components
  • Radioactive items

Anyone needing disposal of hazardous, explosive or unknown materials should not bring those items to the event. Instead, residents are asked to contact the Franklin County Bomb Squad directly at 614-525-4790 to arrange a safe pickup.

To ensure a smooth and safe process, participants should:

  • Transport ammunition in a secure container or packaging
  • Keep ammunition in the trunk or rear cargo area of their vehicle
  • Remain inside their vehicle unless directed otherwise by staff
  • Follow all instructions from on-site personnel

Event organizers also reserve the right to refuse any materials deemed unsafe or prohibited.
