How should some of Hilliard’s key areas grow and evolve in the years ahead?
The City is seeking community input on proposed zoning code updates for Downtown Hilliard, the Gateway District (along Cemetery and Leap roads), and the Heritage Trail corridors.
Residents are invited to attend an open house Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, 3800 Municipal Way, to share feedback about proposed zoning code updates. Community members can stop by anytime during the open house to review proposed zoning districts and maps, talk with City staff, and provide feedback.
The City recently mailed letters to property owners and residents living within 400 feet of properties that could be affected by the proposed changes.
What would the proposed changes do?
The updates would establish new zoning districts and architectural standards to help implement the vision of the Hilliard Community Plan. The proposed standards are intended to encourage high-quality design, expand housing options, support a mix of businesses and residential uses, improve walkability and focus growth in areas where infrastructure is already in place.
The proposed changes would not initiate or guarantee development. Instead, they would establish rules for what uses and types of development may be permitted on properties within the designated districts.
Development occurs when private property owners choose to develop their land and submit proposals for review through the City’s development process. Any changes resulting from the zoning updates are expected to happen gradually over many years. Future development proposals generally include additional opportunities for public input and review by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
How can residents get involved?
In addition to the Nov. 17 open house, residents can learn more at these upcoming meetings and office hours:
- City Council Committee of the Whole meeting
- Monday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m.
- Planning Commission presentation
