Horseshoe Club: This could be your ‘lucky’ day!

Let us “pitch” you an idea for a new hobby: Horseshoes!

The Hilliard Horseshoe Club has been part of the community since 1978, and you can find them tossing the lucky irons at the horseshoe courts in Municipal Park during leagues each Wednesday night from May through August.

The club was originally named the Iron Tossers, and was named after player and one-time treasurer Paul Burkitt. He also served as a Hilliard City Council member from 1982-1991 and was a longtime member of the Recreation and Parks Commission and the Happiness Club at the Hilliard Senior Center.

“He spent countless hours working on the pits, mowing the grass, being a general handyman, and our liaison to the Recreation and Parks Department,” said club president Mike Ruehrmund.

The club also maintains the horseshoe pits in Municipal Park and hosts an annual summer tournament, which draws players from around the state.

Membership dues are $25 – a bargain for joining in a club that offers exercise, life-long friends, and competition.

“This is a lifelong family sport,” Ruehrmund said. “There’s no advantage of being young or
old, male or female. Our league typically has them all! It’s a nice combination of serious and fun! League handicaps help even out the competition.”
