HPD’s Lt. Harris graduates from FBI National Academy

Lt. Tyler Harris FBI National Academy graduation

City of Hilliard Division of Police Lieutenant Tyler Harris has graduated as a member of the 296th session of the FBI National Academy.

Harris completed the 11‑week program this fall. A graduation ceremony was held Dec. 11 in Quantico, Va.

Fewer than 1% of law enforcement officers nationwide are selected to attend. He is one of three active Hilliard police officers to have completed the prestigious program, alongside Chief of Police Michael Woods and Deputy Chief of Police Kelly Weiner.

The FBI National Academy is internationally recognized for its academic excellence, offering advanced coursework in communication, leadership, and fitness. Participants are chosen for their proven professional records and typically bring an average of 21 years of law‑enforcement experience. Graduates often go on to serve in executive‑level roles within their agencies.

The 296th session included 254 law enforcement professionals representing 47 states and the District of Columbia, as well as officers from 24 countries, four military organizations, and two federal civilian agencies.

“Hilliard is incredibly proud of Lt. Harris for completing the FBI National Academy,” said Chief Woods. “The skills and leadership training he gained through this program will further strengthen our department and enhance the service we provide to our community.”

Harris joined the Hilliard Division of Police in 2015. A West Jefferson native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Otterbein University before beginning his career as a corrections officer with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 2023 and has supervised the Crash Investigation Team, TASER program, and K9 Unit. He also serves as an instructor in the agency’s defensive tactics and women’s self‑defense programs.
