The classic, old-school barbershop at 4039 Main Street in Downtown Hilliard has a bright, new outlook thanks to James and Lisa Lentz.
The central Ohio couple bought Barker’s Barbershop in March and already have plans to renovate the building thanks to an Old Hilliard Façade Grant. In just three short months, the Lentzes have worked alongside City of Hilliard staff and the Hilliard Development Corporation to get funding approved.
The couple hopes to begin renovations this summer. James handles the business side of the barbershop. Lisa, who’s been cutting hair in central Ohio for 15 years, serves as one of the barbers on staff.
“Hilliard actually chose us,” James said. “We’d been considering opening a barbershop in the Columbus area for some time when this opportunity presented itself. After visiting the area and getting to know some of the people here, it was the perfect location for us.”
Barker’s Barbershop has been a staple of Main Street in Downtown Hilliard for more than 100 years. According to the Hilliard Historical Society, the building has solely served as a barbershop since the early 1900s. The Lentzes said their goal is to pay homage to that history while maintaining the classic barbershop feel. Renovations will include an entirely new exterior and structural and interior updates.
“We want to add value and keep the charm that’s always been there,” Lisa said. “The people have been so welcoming here and we feel so lucky to be part of this vibrant, growing community in Downtown Hilliard.”
Barker’s Barbershop specializes in men’s haircuts and is open Monday through Saturday to both walk-ins and appointments. To book an appointment, call (614) 876-6152, or go online.
