Orange bag program adds ‘Heft’ to recycling in Hilliard

Hefty Renew

A program offered through Rumpke and the Hefty company makes it even easier to be green – by adding a little orange to your recycling bin!

All Hilliard residents have to do is put their hard-to-recycle plastics and foam products in special orange Hefty ReNew bags and put those bags in their Local Waste recycling bins. These bags are then collected on Tuesday with other recyclables.

The orange ReNew bags are separated at Rumpke’s processing facility and sent to another site for processing.

Items that can be placed in the bags include:

  • Chip bags and plastic wrappers for candy and granola
  • Foam packaging and foam “peanut” packing materials
  • Plastic bags from inside cereal and cake mix boxes
  • Cookie sleeves and similar products
  • Foam egg cartons
  • Fresh and frozen fruit and vegetable bags
  • Plastic grocery bags
  • Dry and wet disposable cleaning cloths
  • Food storage bags
  • Bubble wrap
  • Foam plates and cups
  • Plastic straws and utensils

“The upside of this program is that it allows residents to easily collect and recycle many hard-to-recycle plastics as part of their normal solid waste and recycling pick-up,” said Dan Ralley, Hilliard Assistant City Manager.

To participate, residents just need to purchase the special orange Hefty bags at participating retail stores.  Interested residents can also request a free Hefty ReNew starter kit online.

Of course, residents will continue to enjoy the ease of placing the rest of their recyclables – including metal cans, paper products, and cardboard – directly in their Local Waste container without placing it in plastic garbage bags.

Styrofoam also can be dropped off at the City’s collection site on Municipal Way, across from the Municipal Building at 3800 Municipal Way.
