New traffic barricades will improve pedestrian safety

A new traffic barricade system is now available in Hilliard to protect pedestrians gathering for events.

The high-strength barrier system will debut this weekend at Hilliard’s Tree Lighting, slated for 4 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The barricades are light enough to be easily portable to other locations and events throughout the community – but sturdy enough to stop a 5,000-pound truck within a few feet.

Drivers should be aware of the following road closures this Sunday:

  • Main Street from Norwich to Franklin streets
  • Center Street from Main to Columbia streets
  • Franklin Street from Main to Columbia Street

The barricades were custom designed for these spaces by a central Ohio-based company, Asynt Solutions. Constructed from advanced composite materials and featuring a reinforced, proprietary anchoring system, they provide the durability and security needed to protect gatherings, according to the company.

At a fraction of the weight of traditional concrete barriers, the system is easy to install, remove, and reuse.

Whether it be intentional or accidental, vehicle ramming must be prevented at community events, said City of Hilliard Division of Police Lt. Tyler Harris. These barriers safeguard activities from vehicular intrusion while maintaining the atmosphere of community gatherings, he said.

“We have used various barricades over the years to manage pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow in order to ensure crowd safety,” Lt. Harris said. “This particular system is ideal because the barricades can be easily dropped into the roadway.”
