Public Safety Youth Academy invites teens to learn about police, fire careers

Public Safety Youth Academy

Hilliard teenagers can get an inside look at law enforcement and fire service during a week-long program with first responders this summer.

The City of Hilliard Division of Police and Norwich Township Fire Department are partnering to offer the third class of the Hilliard Public Safety Youth Academy, slated for June 15-19, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The program will be open to students entering ninth through 12th grade in the 2026-2027 school year and will take place at the Safety Services Building, 5171 Northwest Parkway. Dinner will be provided each evening.

Activities will include a tour of the police and fire departments, hands-on speed radar use, scenario and traffic stop simulations, crime scene investigation, building searches, pulling hose lines, spraying water, and equipment and EMS demonstrations, culminating in an end-of-week obstacle course.

Many of the law enforcement instructors will be Hilliard school resource officers.

“We’re excited to spend five evenings showing these high schoolers first-hand what we do as police officers and firefighters,” said Chief of Police Michael Woods. “It’s also an opportunity for them to build relationships with their school resource officers, learn about careers in emergency response, and promote safety to their peers.”

Students who have completed the course and have an interest in a law enforcement career will have the opportunity to join Hilliard’s Explorer’s Post 2286.

The Youth Academy cost is $30 and includes a T-shirt and hat to wear during class. Spots are limited. To register, visit the City’s online program registration portal.
