More senior discounts, longer yard waste collection part of future trash, recycling service

Hilliard residents will see greater eligibility for senior discounts and a longer collection period for yard waste as part of next year’s trash, recycling, and yard waste collection service.

“Hilliard’s residents will continue to receive the same excellent collection service they have received in the past, plus will see an added benefit of a longer collection window for curbside yard waste and greater eligibility for senior discounts,” according to Dan Ralley, Assistant City Manager.

As part of the improved service, yard waste will now be collected from March 1 through mid-January. The City also will continue to offer on-demand brush chipping service from mid-April through mid-October for residents who fill out an online request at hilliardohio.gov/service-request/

Residents will see an increase in their trash and recycling bill starting with the next billing cycle. This will be the first increase in the cost of trash collection since July 2021. The fee adjustments are based on increased service delivery costs from Local Waste, including increased fuel costs, rising wages, and other effects of inflation.

The monthly cost for standard trash collection from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, will be $23.50 per month, up from 19.73 per month previously. The new standard rate equals $141 per every six-month billing period.

Bills reflecting these changes will arrive mid-July.

The City offers residents discounts based on age and financial hardship:

  • Residents who pay up front for a full year of service will receive a $10 discount, making their annual cost $272.
  • The standard 10% senior discount will now be available to people who are ages 60 and older. This is five years younger than the previous age eligibility of 65.  An additional $10 discount is available to seniors who pay their annual bill in full. With the standard discount, seniors will pay $21.15 per month ($126.90 per half year). If they pay the full year in advance, their annual bill will be $242.80. Residents already receiving a senior discount do not need to reapply unless they have moved within Hilliard in the past year.
  • The City also offers hardship discounts to home owners who meet certain income requirements.

Senior and hardship discount applications are available online at hilliardohio.gov/trash-recycling/ or by stopping at Hilliard Municipal Building between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

Collection dates and rules for placing trash and recycling bins at the curb will not be changing. Full details can be found at https://hilliardohio.gov/trash-recycling/
