City Begins Franklin Street Improvements

Map render of Franklin Street

Construction work to improve the walkability, safety, environmental impact, parking, and aesthetics of the Franklin Street area began last week.

Contractors working for the City have started construction to improve Franklin Street between Main Street in Old Hilliard and the Landmark Lofts development off Cemetery Road. The work also will include a portion of Columbia Street.

Beginning Jan. 6, Franklin Street will close to through traffic at Landmark Lofts. Franklin Street residents and business owners within the work limits will access their properties from Main Street and Columbia Street. Access to Landmark Lofts will be from Cemetery Road only. The street is expected to open to through traffic by the end of July 2020.

The improvements will include street reconstruction to provide curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, on-street parallel parking, and landscaping. This project also will make improvements to water and sewer lines.

Residents and businesses in the affected area were notified of the work in December. Underground utility work will be performed during the winter months. Street work will begin in the spring. Street reconstruction, including sidewalks, curbs, and lighting, will continue into the summer and will be complete in September 2020.

“These improvements reflect the City’s commitment to improving drainage in Old Hilliard with environmentally friendly ‘green infrastructure,’” said Letty Schamp, Deputy City Engineer. “The on-street parallel parking areas will include pervious pavers, which allow stormwater to pass through and be treated before it flows into the underground sewer system and to streams. This system, along with planned street landscaping elements, will reduce the impact our streets have on the environment.”
