Senior Reading Program Seeks Volunteers to Inspire Young Minds

Are you ready to make a difference in the lives of children? The City of Hilliard Senior Center and Hilliard City School District (HCSD) are on the lookout for dedicated volunteers to join the Back to School Volunteer Program.

Launching for the first time this fall, the Back to School Volunteer Program pairs local seniors with elementary school students to share the joys of reading and create meaningful connections. The program is expected to improve literacy rates, create bonds that transcend generations, and provide meaningful volunteer opportunities to those ages 55 and up.

“We are excited to partner with the City on the Back to School Volunteer program,” said Hilliard City School District Superintendent David Stewart. “This initiative, made possible by Director of Elementary Education Curriculum Herb Higginbotham, will bridge generations by inviting seniors into our schools, where they will play a vital role in helping our youngest students become better readers. It’s an opportunity for seniors to not only enrich the lives of our students, but also to gain deeper insights into our schools and the incredible potential of our students.”

In order for the program to be successful, the City of Hilliard is seeking community members ages 55 and older who are interested in volunteering. Participants will assist with reading and academic support, play board games, help in the classroom, and more! Each school will have different needs, which will be assigned by the specific principal. The commitment is flexible, and will allow seniors to spend as much, or as little, time as they would like volunteering.

“If you are looking for ways to be a special adult for someone, this is for you,” said Hilliard City Council member Tina Cottone. “A recent survey of Hilliard seniors showed a desire for more inter-generational activities, and this is your chance to participate in an activity that will fulfill that desire and make a difference in the lives of both students and teachers.”

By volunteering, you’re not only enriching the lives of children but also nurturing your own sense of purpose and making a lasting impact!
