A Hilliard police sergeant was among four Ohio law enforcement officers recognized Tuesday at a Columbus Clippers baseball game as part of Law Enforcement and Light Ohio Blue Kickoff night.
Sergeant Suzanne Muraco, a Hilliard native who has served as a Hilliard Division of Police officer since 1995, was honored at the start of the game.
The event kicked off Light Ohio Blue Week, which leads into National Police Week. Light Ohio Blue encourages residents to show support for law enforcement by placing blue exterior lights at their homes and businesses.
Muraco was promoted to sergeant at Hilliard police in 2014. She is a multi-state-certified instructor specializing in self-defense, firearms and patrol tactics, and has instructed at Columbus State Community College Police Academy for 19 years.
Additionally, she is an instructor for HPD’s Women’s Self Defense and Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events programs.
She has received many awards during her career at Hilliard police, most recently receiving the Chief’s Award from HPD in February for her work organizing a large-scale active shooter training exercise with all 1,600 members of the Hilliard City School District. The exercise, which took place in August, was the first of its kind in scale and is considered a model for other communities.
Muraco, who currently supervises the agency’s Criminal Investigative Unit, is also the first female to have been promoted to sergeant in the agency’s history.
