The City of Hilliard will hold a “first pitch” at the newly updated Father Roderic J. DiPietro Park at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 8.
Individuals with disabilities can now play baseball at the “Buddy Ball” field at Father Roderic J. DiPietro Park, 3481 Davidson Road, Hilliard, OH 43026.
It’s the first field of its kind in the City of Hilliard, says Recreation and Parks Director Ed Merritt.
“The new field has additional inclusive space, allowing all children and adults the opportunity to play,” Merritt said.
Locally, Buddy Ball is offered through Hilliard Baseball Association. This modified version of baseball includes special rules, equipment (if needed), and a “buddy” system to accommodate various levels of skill. The buddy helpers are charged with assisting each participant in the field and at bat.
In addition to the inclusive field, the City also added new fences and backstops on all four fields, covered dugouts, a new restroom facility, and a walking path.
Join us as we “root, root, root for the home team” and enjoy refreshments at Hilliard Baseball Association’s first Buddy Ball game at 3 p.m. May 8. Members of the public are invited to watch Ohio Senator Stephanie Kunze throw the first pitch.
